A simple guide to You've Met Me POAPs

A simple guide to You've Met Me POAPs

In September 2021, during NFT NYC, a passionate POAP collector had a simple idea: Could a moment shared between two people become a memory worth minting? That idea kicked off the trend of You’ve Met Me POAPs, a special moment when two people meet and mint a POAP to celebrate the occasion.

Since then, these POAPs have had quite the legacy:

  • Gmoney gave them out as early as BTC Miami 2021, later rewarding holders with Admit 001 whitelist spots that turned out to be quite lucrative.
  • At EthCC 2022, in partnership with IYK and ENS, NFC-enabled cards helped attendees mint POAPs when they met each other.
  • Storytellers of all stripes, from founders like Lefteris and our own Patricio Worthalter, to core developers like Matoken and artists like Rebecca Rose regularly use them to connect and share their journeys.

Remember, we were there together

Connection and elevation – making an experience that stands out – are two ways to turn a moment into a real highlight. The POAP minting experience is designed to be delightful, with haptics, fun animations, and easy ways to share. The experience is completed with artwork that feels like you, and by making sharing fundamentally social.

When the You've Met Me POAP experience is designed well, these POAPs:

  • Bring people together: The experience is a low-pressure reason to connect
  • Tell a story: Think of a high quality POAP as another brand surface area: its a great opportunity to
  • Build community: Over time, these POAPs paint a picture of the people supporting a project or initiative.
🏅
When you give out POAPs for meeting you to everyone you meet for years, it leaves a mark. Patricio has given out “You Met Me” POAPs at every occasion for years, and is personally responsible for telling over 6500 people about POAP (at the time of writing). For many, they’ve become a highlight of their conference experience; a way of saying “we met, and it meant something.”

How to make a memorable You’ve Met Me POAP

Collectors will have these mementos forever, so make them count! Take inspiration from an album you love, a unique illustration style, your PFP, or your favorite comic strip. Not only will the art look great, but it will serve as a point of connection between you and whoever you meet.

Some common themes:

  • A fun drawing of you (or your online persona)
  • Artwork inspired by the city or setting of the event
  • A nod to your project’s visual identity (e.g. brand mascot)
  • Inside jokes, memes, or pop culture references

Some people work with illustrators. Others use AI. Many just design it themselves, like Lamboshi, whose playful style has become part of his identity.

Done consistently, You’ve met me POAPs are powerful tools for creators to keep a rolodex of everyone they’ve met; have a touchpoint to keep up with what has happened with those people since; and to give something back to people supporting them.

You can use ancillary tools, like POAP Moments and POAP Fun, to share your adventures with your collectors, and treat them to prizes for being part of your journey.

How to distribute

Once your POAP is designed, you can share it in a way that fits your style. This is another opportunity to elevate the experience - make it fun, personal, surprising and unique.

Most people use one of these methods:

  • The POAP Dispenser inside POAP Home (This is the easiest to set up)
  • A NFC card with unique claim links, like Matoken uses
  • POAPs built into wearables like 9dcc hats, shirts, or rosettes

The method you choose should match the experience you want to give. Quick and casual, or something more memorable and surprising, it’s up to you.

You've Met Me POAPs for teams: Curvegrid in Bangkok

For teams, trade shows and events are an opportunity to get out in the field and meet loyal users, integration partners, liquidity providers, prospective customers, and other critical ecosystem stakeholders. Talking to customers, and getting a clear view of who they are and what they want, is critical for every role in an organization - and “You’ve met Me” POAPs for the team are a great way to make this goal fun for everyone involved.

At DevCon 2024 in Bangkok, Curvegrid created a main booth POAP with Thai motifs to serve as a memento of the location. All 12 attending team members also had a POAP available to distribute, with a simple motif to keep it fresh, fun, and cohesive.

This made it easy for the team to keep tabs on how many different people they met over the course of the week.

A small handful of collectors - those who spent time around multiple team members - received a POAP from more than one team member. This small segment represents those who are most invested in the team and their efforts - community members and enthusiastic supporters.

Gamifying networking at your event

An article about You’ve Met Me POAPs wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the classical activations created at EthCCs, Devcons, and EthDenvers around the world in partnership with ENS Labs. These activations pivot around inviting each guest in attendance to create a POAP for meeting them, which they can distribute using a specialized NFC-enabled card for dispensing the mint links.

The result is pretty special: a graph showing the different contacts that happened during the event. It’s a great way for event organizers to engage new community members, encourage people to meet one another, and introduce a fun, lightly competitive way to earn some neat prizes.

A tool for storytellers and evangelists

“You Met Me” POAPs are especially useful for people who meet others often and represent their brand in the real world.

That includes:

  • Founders
  • Developer advocates
  • Community or ecosystem leads
  • Partnership and BD roles

They’re especially relevant in wallets, infrastructure, and platforms, where NFTs and digital identity are already part of the product.
